Bite-Size Writing: The Hamburger Method

Introduce the ground rules to learners.

Display the question: "When did you last eat/make a hamburger?” and take their responses.
Facilitate a discussion for students to express experiences and thoughts on hamburgers.
Ask: "What are the ingredients for a delicious hamburger?" and lead an interactive class discussion.

Expected responses may include recent events such as a family barbecue, a visit to a fast-food restaurant, or a homemade meal.
Common ingredients might include buns, patties, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, ketchup, and mustard. Students may also mention unique toppings or preferences.

Discussion Question: How is building a hamburger similar to building a paragraph?

Ask students to turn to a classmate, forming pairs for discussion.
Instruct students to share their thoughts on the discussion question.
Guiding questions include:
What are the steps involved in building a hamburger? How about the steps involved in building a paragraph?
What happens if you leave out the meat/cheese/lettuce in a hamburger? What would be the equivalent in a paragraph?

Invite a few pairs to share what their partners discussed about burgers.
Encourage students to actively listen as others share their thoughts.

Pose the question, "What do you recall about the structure of a paragraph?" to initiate thinking about the upcoming lesson on paragraph structure.

Draw a parallel with hamburgers to simplify the concept.
Emphasize that, like hamburger toppings/layers, paragraphs include details to enrich the overall understanding.

Emphasize the top bun as the starting sentence, also known as the 'topic sentence' or 'key idea.'
Define the burger layers as the sentences within the paragraph.
Guide them to recognize that most paragraphs include two to three of these supporting sentences.
Introduce the bottom bun as the ending sentence in the paragraph.

Guide the students through a detail example.

Instruct the students to complete activity 1 on their worksheet.
Discuss the answers with the learners.

Instruct students to choose a topic of interest and compose a paragraph using Canva.
Present students with various topic ideas for paragraph writing:  Birthdays, dream superpower, If I had a robot butler, my pet dinosaur, magic mirror, If I were the President for a day.

Ask the learners to familiarize themselves with the user interface then instruct them to start writing the paragraph.

Method 1: Explain to the learners that they can use the drawing tool to create any drawings and then write the paragraph.

Method 2:  Learners can use the AI image generator to generate the images they want.
